Huna is an ancient philosophical system that allows you to see yourself in the presence of the world.
What inspires me about Huna is that it is not only interested in self-development and self-actualisation or enlightenment - its principles extend into harmonising relationships, community, and indeed, the world. Also, as a Christian who believes in God Emmanuel, God within us, I found that the principles of Huna positively compliments my believes.
Huna teaches that all power comes from within, and that Now is the moment of power - by using one's senses to be present, opening one's heart to appreciation, and focusing one's thoughts on the beauty of everything, these experiences of life are available to everyone, every day.
The only ethic in Huna is love or aloha, and this involves the creation of happiness.
Therefore, the principles are not there to serve an understanding alone, but also to inspire an action. This is an active path, love in action.
The knowledge of Huna has been summarised into 7 basic principles. Traditionally this knowledge was found coded into the Hawaiian language itself, each syllable containing various meanings and characteristics.
*~ IKE ~*
the world is what you think it is
*~ KALA ~*
there are no limits
*~ MAKIA ~*
energy flows where attention goes
*~ MANAWA ~*
now is the moment of power
*~ ALOHA ~*
to love is to be happy with
*~ MANA ~*
all power comes from within
*~ PONO ~*
effectiveness is the measure of truth
These are powers that we already have, yet often overlook in everyday living due to other energy influences on our thoughts.
Let's take for instance the shamantic practice of aloha. It goes something like this: Everything is alive, aware and responsive. You are part of it, and it is there for you. The next time you're in heavy traffic, bless the drivers in front of you for doing their best to keep safe. The next time you are standing in line, compliment the server or cashier for his or her hard work and assistance. No matter where you are or what you do, understand that others are doing their best to make life better.
Be forgiving, complimentary and appreciative for at least one thing an encounter brings. This is the aloha spirit.
It means your self-development is in your hands. As the power behind there statements is understood and experienced, you become more and more able to create your own happiness and destiny.
It does not heal or change you in any manner - you must decide how you wish to feel and how you will use your mana or life force.
Bless the present. Trust yourself and expect the best.

Huna also includes a system of psycho-spiritual knowledge which is one of the oldest and most comprehensive existing on the planet today.
The spiritual psychology of Huna is based on the assumption that there are 3 selves within your being, and that human behaviour and experience can be explained and changed through the interaction of these three aspects or functions.
The 3 selves can roughly be associated with ideas of the subconscious, conscious, and superconscious or higher self ('the observer').
This knowledge of aspects of minds certainly merits consideration, since for example, the kahunas knew about the nature of the subconscious thousands of years before Freud was even born. Not only that, but they knew more about it and how to work with it.
This knowledge is not unique to Huna as traces of it can be found all over the world in many writings of many times.
Something a little 'more' attracts me to the Huna way and that is the practice of Aloha.
The Aloha spirit is a well-known reference to the attitude of friendly acceptance for which the Hawaiin Islands are so famous.
However, it also refers to a powerful way to resolve any problem, accomplish any goal, and to achieve any state of mind or body you desire.
In the Hawaiin language, aloha stands for much more than just 'hello', 'goodbye', or 'love'. It's deeper meaning is 'the joyful (oha) sharing (alo) of life energy (ha) in the present (alo). As you share this energy you become attuned to the Universal Power that The Hawaiins call mana. And the loving use of this incredible Power is the secret of attaining true health, happiness, prosperity and success.
The ancient kahunas were wise and they left us with the shining light Huna and some very effective practical tools to transform our lives and our world.
I invite you to rediscover and explore the ancient wisdom of the kahunas - it will take you on a fascinating journey into yourself and the workings of the universe.
Expand your senses, appreciate the beauty surrounding you right now, and experience the aloha in your soul.
